La Jolla - Featured Images
La Jolla is a place of dramatic coastline and constant change, where cliffs, light, and ocean are always in motion. Much of this work was made along the bluffs and beaches I return to regularly, watching how familiar scenes shift with season, weather, and tide. This gallery features a curated selection of my La Jolla images. If you’d like to see all my La Jolla work, go here.
View of the Torrey Pines bluffs, the lifeguard towers (1 through 5) at Torrey Pines State Beach, Hwy 101 and the Los Peñasquitos Lagoon. Mount Soledad is in the background.

In December of 2023 I went out to get some photos of Great Whites at Torrey Pines and also got some shots of Flat Rock. Using a polarizer filter it also shows the ocean floor.
As for the rectangular shape on top of the rock: this is from an attempt to make a shaft for a coal mine in the late 1800's that would reach under the ocean, as supposedly there is a coal vein some distance off shore. Because of high tides and large waves this was never accomplished.
This image is available in an open edition at all sizes.
The Pacific Ocean off Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla, California is known to be the habitat of many juvenile Great White Sharks. In December of 2023 I went out to check for myself, and yep, found them. This photo shows two juvenile Great White Sharks hanging out in the area about where the surf breaks. The bluffs of Torrey Pines are in the background.

In 2012 I shot my "All Mine!" photograph. Since I number and limit the majority of my photos, that photo sold out pretty quickly.
Eleven years later, I present to you "All Mine! The Way It Should Be". I had this shot in mind before I went back to Windansea, wanting to capture another surfer on the famous break (there is a shallow reef on the ocean floor which creates predictable waves here), with the shack, but this time viewed from the ocean.

This is the view looking south towards Torrey Pines State Beach and the La Jolla peninsula in the background. I love black and white photography: when I hand color my images I always start with a black and white photograph and now and then I leave them untouched. This is one of them: the many textures and details in both the land and ocean add to this scene.
I shot this sunset image from the very south of Del Mar, CA next to Highway 101 when a storm was coming in. One picture shown here was hand colored with oils and acrylics on canvas and the other one was digitally colored. Either are available as prints.

This image was shot at around 5:50 in the morning at Torrey Pines. The sun was still below the horizon and the whole scene was lit by the moon which was shining trough the clouds. You can also see stars through the clouds. I wanted to create a large image (40x60") that would invite the onlooker to step in. Hence, it had to be something "landscapy" but since I rarely do pure landscapes, I thought of an older picture I had taken during the day a while ago of this scene. The exposure was long enough to add some movement in the clouds.

This is Wipeout Beach in La Jolla, California. At the time I didn't know the name of this beach. At some point, painter Wade Koniakowski clarified the actual name of the beach to me.
