In December of 2023 I went out to get some photos of Great Whites at Torrey Pines and also got some shots of Flat Rock. Using a polarizer filter it also shows the ocean floor.
As for the rectangular shape on top of the rock: this is from an attempt to make a shaft for a coal mine in the late 1800's that would reach under the ocean, as supposedly there is a coal vein some distance off shore. Because of high tides and large waves this was never accomplished.
